Strategies On How To Manage Lots Of Homework

For most tutors, homework is one the most efficient ways to ensure that their students follow up their lessons while away from school. Despite their ideology, to some students this is a nightmare, especially when the task is in plenty. Well, homework will always be there, but the attitude doesn’t have to be the same. A lot of homework is easy to deal with if you know the right way to go through it. There are various ways to efficiently deal with tasks perfectly. Some of these ways include

Should kids have homework?

Look before you leap is a common proverb that teachers and educators abide by especially when assigning homework. They have to be careful not to assign after-class work that is too challenging or too easy. While treading on a “challenging and discouraging” scale of balance, homework used to be contended only by students. As time went by, both parents and teachers are now questioning its effectiveness.

What does research recommend?

According to a meta-analysis study, it was found out that homework correlates with student performance. Aha! You might say. But what does this mean? This doesn’t necessarily mean that by tackling many assignments for several hours every night, your child will tremendously improve their grade. No. it only shows that there is a correlation between having my homework done on time and academic achievement.

The same study recommends a 10-minute homework for first graders and another additional 10-minute work for students in subsequent years. While this is a widely adopted regulation for homework today, the study further found out that any amount exceeding this threshold led to very detrimental effects that took a toll on students’ health. Apart from just causing physical and emotional stress, this was proven to also lead to negative attitudes towards take-away assignments among students.

Further research shows that homework did not influence course-graded tests like it did on standardized exams. This means that homework, at least for those who were surveyed on, evidently leads to familiarization of test questions, rather than improve mastery of content.

Homework-related issues

Critics have consistently argued that homework is less beneficial and more chaotic. Parents have admitted that 30-minute homework eventually turns out a 1-hour battle every night in their homes. While these nightly battles continue to ensue in our homes, we must understand the role of collaboration while tackling homework.

As we continue to depict these assignments as “running with an injured ankle”, homework turns to be a pain in the neck when students are unable to complete these assignments. This doesn’t mean that we should start labeling them as lazy but rather identify the real reason why this is happening. It could be that they are discouraged, frustrated, or just anxious. Kids aren’t vending machines that churn our knowledge whenever a take-home task is inserted. To curb all these hassles relating to homework, we suggest that both parents and their kids should come up with clear homework plans.

Should you ban homework?

The abolishment of homework is quickly catching fire across different states especially in elementary schools. By not assigning any homework, these students get the chance to go out and engage in unstructured play that helps them develop other creative skills. For the advanced level students, these take-away assignments have proven to be quite helpful especially when rational quantity is assigned and the teacher’s intention is in check.

If you have been debating on this as well, you should first consider improving the quality and quantity of your assignments for your students in middle school and beyond. You can feel free to ban homework for those below this level.
